Harlem, NY - Over 18 youth and 9 adults from Holy Trinity in East Meadow and St John the Baptist in Rahway, NJ volunteered at Emmaus House on Thursday, February 20. Upon arriving, the group was taken on a walking tour of Harlem by Darryll Wood, a staff member at Emmaus. Darryll took the group to Marcus Garvey Park where he showed them the rock he called "home" for over a year. He told them it was through God's love and Fr David Kirk's ministry of Emmaus House where he was able to take responsibility for his life and get clean. He said though it took several tries, he was able to do it and he has now dedicated his life to helping other on the street. After the walk, the group attended Daily Vespers in the "Chapel of Christ the Homeless" at Emmaus House. Fr Martin gave the sermon and Darryll Wood spoke of Fr David Kirk, the founder of Emmaus House and the vision and mission of Emmaus House. Following supper, the group prepared to take to the streets for teh travelling kitchen. They assembled soup, and made ready the winter clothing donations. Each Thursay evening, residents and friends of Emmaus House, travel through Manhattan in a van, providing food and clothing to people living on the streets. |
